"The Doctor" is the main alias of a space and time traveling alien, the protagonist in the fictional Doctor Who universe, who was created in 1963. Currently the Doctor is in its 13th incarnation, which is the form of a woman, a first.

Background[]

The Doctor is a mysterious alien scientist and renegade Time Lord who has vowed to do no harm and to help others. He has traveled using his alien time-machine called the TARDIS across the cosmos, across time, and to other dimensions and realities. His two favorite worlds are his homeworld of Gallifrey (the home of the Time Lords) and Earth, both which he defends ferociously. The Doctor has saved numerous civilizations, species, worlds, the universe, and all of space-time itself throughout his many incarnations, It is unknown how old the Doctor truly is due to all the time traveling and temporal anomalies he has experienced, but the Doctor claims to be over 800 years old.

The Doctor has fought many tyrants, empires, alien invaders, organizations, criminals, races, and entities both on Earth and across space-time. His greatest enemies are the Daleks, a race of intergalactic genocidal xenophobic cybernetic mutants whom pose the greatest threat to the universe, and the Master, an enemy Time Lord who seeks the conquest of the whole universe. The Doctor has also fought several entities of Cthulhu Mythos including Hastur and Yog-Sothoth, prevailing every time so far.

Time Lords' True Nature[]

The true nature of the Time Lords themselves are also considered to be eldritch, with them known as god-like beings from outer space with enormous power and intelligence. One story even stated that the Time Lords have "another form" which bigger than the sun itself that exists in subspace. The Time Lords themselves have experimented with and weaponized many eldritch lifeforms of their own creation throughout their history, such as during the massive temporal conflicts known as the "War in Heaven" and the Last Great Time War.

Encounters with Cthulhu Mythos[]

The Doctor has encountered and defeated multiple entities of Cthulhu Mythos in his many incarnations.

The Seventh Doctor in particular intentionally confronted the Elder Gods and Great Old Ones many times, and spent so much time defeating every Eldritch Abomination he meets to the point that the gods consider themselves at war with him. He also teamed up with Sherlock Holmes against an entity claiming to be Azathoth. Although he hoped never to meet Nyarlathotep, one of his companions managed to convince a cultist that he was Nyarlathotep himself.

Behind the Mythos[]

Andrew Cartmell, the script editor of the Seventh Doctor seasons (24-26), co-wrote a writer's guide for the expanded Doctor Who universe range of novels when it was taken off the air. In this he created a character known as "the Other" with mysterious but strong ties to the Doctor.

When asked by fans if the Other could be Nyarlathotep, he admitted not knowing who Nyarlathotep was.
