Lovecraft's works directly. The Gardens of Lucullus is a novel by Richard L. Tierney and Glenn Rahman, part of Tierney's Simon of Gitta series that merges the Cthulhu Mythos with sword & sorcery adventure at the time of the Roman Empire. It was published by the Sidecar Preservation Society in 2001.

Synopsis[]

Simon of Gitta, captured and brought to Rome while helping the northern tribes resist the Empire, is released by the Emperor Claudius on the condition that he use his eldritch skills to find out who's behind a goddess cult that's trying to revive a demonic deity from the depths of time. Simon teams up with Rufus Hibernicus, an Irish barbarian turned gladiator, with Rufus' sword and Simon's sorcery (and sword) combating Mythos terrors.

Publication History[]

The Gardens of Lucullus was written in 1981 but not published until 2001,[1] and has long been out of print. Pickman Press is reportedly planning to reissue the book in 2024.[1]

A sequel, Heir of Darkness, was written by Rahman, with a plot outline approved by Tierney. It ended up being published years before The Gardens of Lucullus, in 1989.
