This subject is written on a topic in the real world and reflects factual information. This subject contains information from the Expanded Cthulhu Mythos, and not based on H.P. Lovecraft's works directly. The Resurrected (also known as Shatterbrain) is a film released in 1991. It is inspired by, rather than a direct adaptation of, The Strange Case of Charles Dexter Ward by H. P. Lovecraft.

Synopsis[]

Private detective John March (John Terry) of Providence, Rhode Island-based March Detective Agency is hired by the beautiful wife of pharmaceutical executive and researcher Charles Dexter Ward (Chris Sarandon). Ward has become peculiar and secretive, and moved out of the matrimonial home to continue his odd research in the middle of nowhere in the country. Then, he is arrested and questioned by the police after the discovery that he is having human body parts delivered to him...

It transpires that "Charles Dexter Ward" has become possessed, mentally and spiritually, by his ancestor, a wizard. In the process he has become a ghoul, requiring fresh raw meat and fresh blood to feed upon and maintain control of his hunger.

Behind the Mythos[]

Written by Dan O'Bannon, the plot of the film borrows from the Lovecraft original, and follows some of the concepts in the original story. It also tries to make Providence and Rhode Island into "characters" in their own right, which is true to Lovecraft's original vision in his cosmic horror work.

The film features a contemporary (1991) private detective character who takes on a Mythos related case ("Wizards Bones") with somewhat predictable results. This is similar to more recent works such as the Arkham Detective Agency stories.
