Publication History[]
"The Return of Hastur" was first published in Weird Tales in March 1939, later in The Mask of Cthulhu (1958), and again in The Hastur Cycle (1998).
Behind the Mythos[]
In "The Return of Hastur" Derleth ties Hastur deeply into the Cthulhu Mythos as a Great Old One and introduces the controversial Elemental Theory of the Great Old Ones. The story assumes that the writings of H. P. Lovecraft and Robert W. Chambers exist in the world in which the story takes place, and implies a connection between Hastur and Shub-Niggurath. Set in Arkham, it also ties the Shoggoth's cry of Tekeli-li into the Yellow Mythos.
