It was first published in the John Prescott-edited digital anthology Dreaming in Darkness in June 2013.

Synopsis[]

Nathan, a novelist with writer's block, books a room in a stately home in his ancestral homeland of County Durham, England. Although finding inspiration for a new book and a woman with whom he falls in love, he also uncovers a despicable cult dedicated to bringing about the rebirth of their master, the creature known as Shudde M'ell. Nathan, with help from a doomed gamekeeper, thwarts the cult and defeats the monstrous creature, but is forever after haunted by the things which he witnessed in the catacombs beneath rural England.

Behind the Mythos[]

Shudde M'ell, a colossal burrowing abomination, is implied to have been the basis for the real-world legend of the Lambton Worm, a monstrous creature from English folklore said to have terrorised the area during the Middle Ages[1].

One of the ancient volumes encountered by Nathan during his researches is Ludvig Prinn's De Vermis Mysteriis.

Publication History[]

Since its debut in Dreaming in Darkness, "The Serpents Egg" has been released as a self-titled digital chapbook through Amazon's Kindle platform.
