Lovecraft, billed as one of the controversial "posthumous collaborations" between the two writers. It initially appeared in the July 1954 issue of Weird Tales, and then was the title story of a collection of Derleth/Lovecraft "collaborations" released by Arkham House in 1957.

Synopsis[]

The story concerns the efforts of antiquarian Alijah Atwood to investigate the history of the Carriere House on Benefit Street in Providence, Rhode Island, which Atwood is renting. The owner of the house, Jean-Francois Charriere, a surgeon who supposedly died in 1927, was born in Bayonne, France, in 1636 after having achieved near-immortality by turning himself into a kind of human/reptile hybrid.
