"The Thing from the Trenches" is a short story by Robert M. Price. It expands on a section of Lovecraft's short story "Herbert West--Reanimator".
Synopsis[]
On the Western Front, Herbert West discovers the remains of two soldiers - one French and one German - whose diaries reveal them to have almost identical psychologies, and he convinces his friend to aid him in an experiment to create a composite entity. Although the resulting creature appears to be possessed of all its faculties, the experiment is ultimately unsuccessful as it literally tears itself apart due to conflicting national allegiances.
