Synopsis[]

A man relates the tale of how, as a boy, he witnessed the taking of one of his friends from a local pond by an unknown creature. Later, his friend returned, reanimated and rotting, to try and entice the boy down to the city of Tsath where he claimed to live in contented servitude.

As an adult, the man comes back from the Second World War lame and traumatised, and returns to the pond. Desperate to belong, he begs the being which lurks beneath the surface to take him down to Tsath.

Characters[]

  • Ted, a war veteran with mental and physical scars.
  • Johnny Haxton, a childhood friend of Ted’s.
  • Jeb Carter, the man who dug the pond, and was the first victim of whatever lurks beneath its surface.
