"The Wendigo" is a novella by Algernon Blackwood that was first published in The Lost Valley and Other Stories (Eveleigh Nash, 1910). Lovecraft in Supernatural Horror in Literature called it "amazingly potent" (though "less artistically finished" than Blackwood's "The Willows"). "The Wendigo"'s depiction of an encounter with a supernatural creature in the Canadian wilderness deeply influenced August Derleth, and through him the broader Cthulhu Mythos.
The story is set in the wilderness of western Ontario, north of the real-life town of Rat Portage.
