Tower of Shadows, later retitled to Creatures on the Loose, was a bi-monthly comic book anthology series which ran for six years between 1969 and 1975. It initially printed stand-alone horror stories, but after rebranding moved on to primarily fantasy works, and several stories appeared in its pages over the years.

Tower of Shadows[]

  • "At the Stroke of Midnight", the lead story in the debut issue, was originally titled "The Lurking Fear at Shadow House" by writer-artist Jim Steranko as an homage to the works of H. P. Lovecraft, but was changed by editor Jim Lee before publication.
  • "The Terrible Old Man" was adapted for issue #3.
  • An adaptation of "Pickman's Model" featured in issue #9.

Creatures on the Loose[]

  • Issue #10 featured a short King Kull story.
  • "Thongor : Warrior of Lost Lemuria!" appeared in issue #22.
