Lovecraft's works directly. Vampirella vs. Reanimator is a four-issue crossover mini-series which pits the superhero Vampirella against H. P. Lovecraft's demented doctor Herbert West. Written by Cullen Bunn and featuring artwork by Blacky Shepherd, it was based on an original story by Bunn and Shepherd, and was first published by Dynamite Entertainment between December 2018 and April 2019; a trade paperback collecting all issues was released in August 2019.

Although the series featured colour covers - and an extensive number of alternate covers showcased in the collected edition - the story itself is rendered almost entirely in black-and-white, including only a few splashes of colour here and there, mostly red to denote blood, and a sickly yellow or purple for West's reagents.

Synopsis[]

During the course of his quest to conquer death, crazed scientist Herbert West accidentally awakens the Aztec Goddess of Death Mictecaciguatl, in reality a powerful member of the species to which Vampirella belongs, the Drakulons.

When Vampirella becomes aware of what has transpired, she immediately reacts, knowing that whatever Mictecaciguatl has planned will be disastrous for the human race. However, the reagent used on the goddess by West has granted her a tremendous level of power, and Vampirella is easily defeated.

In an effort to gain an ally, Vampirella awakens Mictecaciguatl's husband, the Death God Mictlantecuhtl, believing that Mictecaciguatl's dalliance with West will drive him into paroxysms of jealousy sufficient to kill his errant wife. However, when confronted the goddess reveals to him that she had only been using West to construct a portal to Drakulon, one which will allow a dark energy to flow through and consume the Earth.

In desperation, Vampirella injects herself with a new version of West' reagent, and becomes even more powerful than the Death Gods. She easily overcomes them, killing Mictlantecuhtl outright, and cursing Mictecaciguatl to ten thousand years of torment in a limbo-like realm. When she returns to wreak her vengeance on West, he has already made his escape.
