The Vigilant is a freighter owned by the Morrison Co. which originated in Valparaíso, Chile. En route to Sydney, the crew of the Vigilant sights the yacht Alert, populated by two surviving members of the schooner Emma, Gustaf Johansen and William Briden, the latter of whom has been dead for several days. Vigilant tows Alert to Sydney, where the yacht is sold for commercial use.
