Charles Vicent Emerson Starrett (1886 - 1974) was a Canadian-American journalist, mystery and fantasy author, poet, and literary scholar who corresponded with H. P. Lovecraft. He is perhaps most well known for his pioneer works of Sherlock Holmes scholarship. He was also a fan of Arthur Machen and helped to popularise Machen's work in America.
Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Starrett's family moved to Chicago, Illinois, USA. Some of his short stories were published in the earliest issues of Weird Tales in 1923. The 1935 movie The Great Hotel Murder was based on Starrett's story "Recipe for Murder".[1]
Starrett wrote a poem about Lovecraft titled "HPL", which was published in the 1949 Arkham House anthology Something About Cats and Other Pieces. He also contributed to the Yellow Mythos with the poem "Cordelia's Song from The King in Yellow", which first appeared in Weird Tales and was reprinted in Lin Carter's 1971 anthology The Spawn of Cthulhu.
