William Hope Hodgson (15 November 1877 – 19 April 1918) was a prolific British author who wrote in a number of genres. His works are known to have inspired the likes of H. P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith and Henry S. Whitehead, and he was responsible for the creation of supernatural detective Thomas Carnacki, a character who has been expanded on for many years by many authors.
Hodgson was killed in action during the First World War at the fourth battle of Ypres, April 1918.
