This subject contains information from the "Lovecraft Circle" Myth Cycles, and while guided by HPL are not based on his work alone. Yogash the Ghoul is a mysterious entity that is in the line of Azathoth, descending through Cthulhu, and producing the line which would produce H. P. Lovecraft. It's not clear if this degree of separation from Cthulhu and Azathoth renders Yogash the Ghoul mortal, or if his powers and capacity are significantly diminished compared to the Great Old Ones.

It is proposed that his father's moniker, Shaurash-ho, "The Father of Ghouls", was literal and that Yogash was the first of the Ghouls, and the origin of that species. Due to the humanoid features and the capacity for the continued cross-breeding with the human species, it is likely that the "union" of Shaurash-ho, biological or otherwise, was with a human parent. This would have yielded a near human genetic variant, but with obviously bestial and monstrous features. This concept is supported by the seeming continual genetic compatibility with humans which would eventually yield Richard Pickman, who in most respects was indistinguishable from his fellow human peers.

He appeared in Nyarlathotep's retinue in the climax of the The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath.

Behind the Mythos[]

In Lin Carter's Xothic Legend Cycle, Yogash is also the name of a Deep One hybrid who worked for Abner Exekiel Hoag, and was responsible for translating the Ponape Scripture. (EXP: "Out of the Ages", "The Fishers from Outside")
