This subject contains information from the Expanded Cthulhu Mythos, and not based on H.P. Lovecraft's works directly. Zathog, Dark Lord of the Whirling Vortices is a fictional character created by the late American author Richard L. Tierney for his 1975 short story "From Beyond the Stars."

Overview[]

Zathog is a Great Old One who settled in the heart of the planet Zarr in the Xentilx galaxy after fleeing from the war with the Elder Gods and their "overweening" sphere of influence. It is one of the few gods not deep in torpor, and additionally still possesses its full powers (possibly because it moved to another galaxy, thus escaping the influence of the "star change"). It became the patron god of the Zarrians offering them rulership of the Universe in return for freeing the Old Ones, and the destruction of the Elder Gods (or Pain Lords), even at the cost of all time and space. It is said to be Ubbo-Sathla's brother and seeks to unite life on Earth into the Oneness of Ubbo-Sathla once more.

Behind the Mythos[]

First created by Richard L. Tierney for his 1975 short story "From Beyond the Stars," Zathog has also been used in the fiction of Llewellyn M. Cabos.

Trivia[]

  • A reference to "Black Zathog, the master of the Zarrians" is made in the Necronomicon (source?). Whether this is the same entity remains unclear, although the reference to Zarrians makes it seem likely.
  • The name is reminiscent of Zoth-Ommog.
